Chapter 4: Does the Goddess Actually Have Too Much Free Time?

“Wake up, hero. Open your eyes.”

The hero awoke to find himself in the same place where he first met the goddess. Naturally, the goddess was also there.

“Ugh… Huh?! Goddess?! Did I actually die? Can I still continue?”

“Calm down, hero.”

“Oh, right! I didn’t save yet. Well, I mean, I couldn’t even find a save point!”

The goddess looked amazed, smiling as she plucked out bead-like accessories (?) from her hair. She declared, “So calm down. If you’re too obstinate, I’ll split your soul and reincarnate you as ants, crush you under my high heels like bubble wrap to pass my free time, eternally reviving and killing you, the cycle of reincarnation, repeating over and over.”

The hero became calm. “Ah, excuse me.”

Under her robe, the goddess wore those heels. ‘Not the kind of shoes you’d expect her to wear, huh,’ the hero thought.

The goddess returned to her usual expression and continued. “Rest assured, hero, that you only fainted from the fight with the demon. By the way, if you die, that’s the end.”

“I see… Thank god. Then what business do you have with me here?”

“You lost consciousness at a good time, so I’m dropping by in your dream. Congratulations on leveling up.”

“Right, I leveled up. How can I check my status, where are the controls?”

“There’s nothing like that. The necessary information is planted directly into your mind when you level up. Do you want to try it out by meditating? I think you’ll figure out something’s different from before.”

The hero concentrated, trying to check his status. “Indeed… I feel like it’s changed. Everything except wisdom…”

“That’s because there are differences in individuals when it comes to ability progress, right? It may seem like you can’t gain new skills like this, but when you learn them you’ll physically feel it in your body. So please patiently work hard.”

“I see.”

“Hero, what are your thoughts on visiting a different world? Don’t you have any questions?”

“At the moment, not really… Oh, that reminds me.”

“What is it?”

“When I was over there, I just randomly started calling their currency ‘gold’ and saying things like ‘HP’. But they didn’t seem to react strangely.”

“That’s because of the translation skill I gave you. I told you not to worry about the language, didn’t I?”

The goddess looked like she just said ‘so what?’ The hero felt troubled.

“While I do appreciate it, maybe it’s a little too handy. Like, what if using this in a different world means my identity as a modern person will…”

The hero was bewildered, and the goddess looked shocked. She said, “What is all this now, after you were summoned naked here? You’re not the type to frighten these different world citizens with cell phones and mess around with languages, are you?”

“No, if you’re alright with it I don’t mind either, but it feels like something’s wrong.”

The goddess thought for a while, and then murmured something with a smirk. “Hmm, I suppose it might be alright to mess around just a little…”

“What did you say, goddess?”

With a suspicious smile on her face, the goddess said, “No no, it’s nothing. I was just admiring your convenient selective listening as a protagonist. As one would expect from a hero. Hehehe.”

“….-……,…-…..”

The hero felt like he heard someone’s unclear voice that he couldn’t make out very well.

“Either way, it looks like it’s time for you to wake up. Please keep moving on, good luck, hero!”

“Wait, god—”

The hero dissolved into the center of the light…

Novel: Is He a Hero? “Yup.”

Chapter 3: Didn’t You Think That’s the Hero’s Opening Diet?

The slasher squirrel appeared from the barrel. The hero and the king got into battle position.

“Sir hero! Grab a weapon, quick!”

“Alright.” The hero confronted the demon, holding a 60-cm long stick.

“H-hey, sir hero?! What will you do with a weapon like that?!”

“Well, I’m still just level 1.”

“Hahaha, you really are underestimating me!”

The slasher squirrel moved at high speed. The hero lost sight of it, while the king was trembling, unable to move. “It’s fast! I can’t see it anymore!”

“Muahaha, given up already? Muahaha! Then I’ll kill you just as I please!”

The slasher squirrel jumped at high speed. The hero and kings’ clothes flapped in the wind, disheveled by the swift movement.

“Aghh!”

The hero attacked. The slasher squirrel received 4 damage.

“Gyaah! How… did you?!”

“So your movements are simple, even though you’re fast? Well, I guess it’s because this is the tutorial.”

The slasher squirrel trembled at the hero. The king started talking, as if suddenly understanding something.

“Now I see! The clothes made of cloth! You’re reading the demon’s next move from the wind after the demon moves! And then you chose not a sword that excels in offensive ability, but a stick you can easily wield indoors!”

“Haah, so you realized from the weight of the barrel that I’m the type that uses light, flexible movements?”

The king and the slasher squirrel both jumped to conclusions. The hero was bewildered. “I just had a feeling if I waved something about I’d end up getting a hit in…”

“But hey… Don’t even think for a second that I’m weak!”

The slasher squirrel attacked. The hero received 8 damage.

“Ah—it really does hurt…” The hero started bleeding.

“Sir hero! You demon bastard!” The king attacked. He missed, and didn’t hit.

“I should’ve delivered the finishing blow when the hero hit me earlier! Stop talking now!”

“…!”

The slasher squirrel attacked. The hero received 10 damage.

“Gah!”

“Sir hero!”

The hero received a lethal wound. The slasher squirrel laughed boldly.

“Muahaha, with a wound like that you can’t move at all! And now, you can watch as I rip the poor king you’re supposed to be protecting to shreds!”

The slasher squirrel attacked. The king received 3 damage and his clothes got torn.

“Eek!”

“Hah, so you were a woman!” The slasher squirrel looked at the king with a lewd gaze. “Heh, looks like you were trying hard to act like a man… I haven’t eaten shredded abs like that before, but I guess the human males haven’t had a piece of you either, hahahaha!”

“You sleazebag!”

The king pointed her sword towards the demon. The slasher squirrel cackled loudly. Along with that sound of laughter, a sound rather like a cow eating grass came from somewhere.

Munch munch…I’ve heard there’s quite a demand for heroines like you lately.”

The bloodstained hero stood behind the demon. The hero attacked.

“Huh?”

“Agh!”

The slasher squirrel was blown to the front by the hero’s attack, hitting the sword the king had pointed at it. The slasher squirrel received a critical hit: 18 damage.

“Gah… How are you moving…?”

“Huh? You have 1 HP and you can still move like normal?” Mumble mumble.

The king and the demon stiffened. The hero attacked.

Clunk!

The slasher squirrel received 3 damage. The hero defeated the slasher squirrel.

“So much willpower… you have…” Saying that, the demon turned into dust and disappeared. The dazed king returned to her senses.

“….Sir hero?! Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, I’m fine. I used the medicinal plants. Crunch crunch, cough.

“Um, sir hero? You swallowed the medicinal plants…”

“Yeah, so?”

“You’re supposed to apply the medicinal plants on your wound, not eat them…”

“Eh? …Then my HP is…”

“Well, it wasn’t useless since you can move properly, but if the bleeding doesn’t stop… Sir hero!”

The hero collapsed. The king rushed to the hero; her crown had slipped off, unfastening her long hair which waved in the wind.

“Really… If I just had some more strength…” The hero fainted.

“Sir herooooo!!!”

Around that time, the goddess up in the heavens said:

“Oh, hero, collapsing in the first level – how shameful. Well, everything will work out somehow if you don’t die, so keep up that pace please.”

The hero leveled up to level 2.

“I’ll take this opportunity to give you some extra. To be honest, I meant to grant you this after you’d eaten a hundred items, but it won’t affect your status so it should be fine.”

The hero got the title ‘Vegetarian’.

Is He a Hero? “Yup.” Chapter 2 — The Hero Went Crazy?

Novel: Is He a Hero? “Yup.”
Author: Karumi Ayumu

Chapter 2: The Hero Went Crazy?

They gathered in the conference room of Kingdom Cupulm, and the king began explaining the situation.

“Sir hero, I thank you once again for responding to our summoning to save this country from peril. Right now our country is in danger of being destroyed by the armies of the demon king’s followers that have surrounded us. Please look at this map.”

“Alright.”

“Currently there are four dungeons in the vicinity of Cupulm. One in the forest to the north, one in the poisonous wetland overrun by demons in the east, one in the copper ore mountain in the south, and one in the western tower.”

“I see. Can I have this map?”

“Of course, we’ll prepare everything you need for the journey.”

“I need one medicinal plant and 200 gold.”

“Got it.”

Just then, the king thought… ‘this hero really is used to this. To be honest, he looked really weak at first but he must have just weakened due to the faulty summoning we did. No doubt he must have saved some other worlds already.’

“Hehe, I see. You aren’t carrying too much so you won’t get targeted by hoodlums and cause a pointless fuss! But wouldn’t it be a little unpleasant if you didn’t take any armor or weapons?”

“Certainly, I’ve already received enough armor from the maids earlier, these clothes. I’d like something like a stick as a weapon.”

‘Clothes made of just cloth are armor to him?!’ The king had seen gladiators in a Colosseum in a foreign country, and he’d wondered why they looked so strange, naked except for a helmet and loincloth. He’d asked for the reason once. According to a gladiator:

“We don’t wear clothes because they can easily get caught, you know? Armor is the same, if we get held down we can easily get stabbed in between the gaps of the armor. The helmet just protects the head all right. The rest is up to you; some wear gauntlets on their arms since it’s easy to aim for the arm while sword fighting, but I personally don’t since they’re heavy and it gets difficult to lift weapons then.”

He understood their opinion since they were the ones fighting inside the arena with their fellow humans, but just what use had the hero discovered for wearing cloth as armor? As the king thought about that, a maid returned and handed over a bag with the medicinal plant and some coins to the hero.

“Sir hero, here are the items you requested.”

“Thank you.”

The king stopped thinking about it, coming back to his senses only to remember the hero still didn’t have any weapons.

“I’ll show you around the armory. Follow me, sir hero.”

“Alright.”

The king and hero arrived at the armory.

“Well now, sir hero, you can choose whatever weapons you like from here.”

“Hmm…” The hero surveyed the inside of the armory, slowly walking along. He carelessly started lifting up a barrel. “Heave-ho!” He threw it away.

Thud! Thrown away, the barrel fell to the floor and started rolling away. The hero watched that as if mystified, and then said one sentence.

“Huh? It didn’t break…”

“What’s the matter, sir hero?!”

“Nothing, I just wanted to check everything out before I chose a weapon, since this quest will progress if I choose one.”

A rattling sound came from the barrel thrown away earlier, and a voice came from it. “….Ouch ouch ouch, damn you, hero!”

“Who is it?!” the king shouted upon hearing the voice.

“Haaagh!” A demon resembling a flying squirrel jumped out of the barrel, and the king panicked.

“A demon?! Did you get in the palace?!”

“Muahahaha! I heard you were planning to summon a hero. I was trying to deal with it quietly but… Hahaha! Looks like I was a little too late. To think he’d realize I was here just as he entered this room… As expected, a true hero!”

The hero gazed at the demon for some reason, and then answered briefly. “No. It was just by chance.”

“Ohoho! So you got an attitude, huh?! I’ll bury you with this baby king right here too!”

Is He a Hero? “Yup.” Chapter 1 — The Hero’s Summoning

Novel: Is He a Hero? “Yup.”
Author: Karumi Ayumu

― The Hero Sets Off for Another World ―
Chapter 1: The Hero’s Summoning

Kingdom Cupulm, the royal palace. The king and priests were conducting a summoning ceremony.

“Your highness! The summoning circle is responding!”

“Oh! Has the goddess answered? I humbly thank you, o god!” The king had been worried whether the ceremony would be successful or not since they’d lost some important tools for it, but it seemed they’d managed.

“Hahaha…” A divine woman’s voice reached the king’s ears as he offered prayers to the gods. “You should regret this as much as you can……”

The king was shocked at those words. “What?!”

Whoosh!

A shock wave ran through the summoning circle; a lone man made his appearance.

“Oooh, welcome, hero! Your highness? Is something the matter?”

“N-no, it’s nothing.”The king came to his senses at the priest’s words. That voice earlier was probably just a hallucination brought by his worries about the kingdom’s crisis. The smoke from the summoning circle cleared up, and he could now clearly see the hero. It was a nude, androgynous man, kneeling on one knee.

“Ouch ouch ouch… Huh?! Why am I naked?!”

The king quickly realized the situation at hand. “Maids!”

“Yes, what is it?” Some maids appeared from somewhere, bowing to the king.

“Bring the hero some clothes right away.”

“Certainly. Now, hero, our apologies.” The maids brought some measuring tape and clothes from somewhere, surrounding the hero.

“Eh, just let me change by myself!”

“We’re finished now.” The maids had already put on some medieval-like clothes on the hero.

“That fast?! You maids are amazing!”

“That’s very kind of you to say.”

As the king took a step forward to the hero, the maids dispersed left and right to make room.

“I apologize, sir hero. It seems our ceremony was rather overbearing, so things turned out like this. I hope you’ll forgive us. And now, I thank you for responding to our summoning for someone to save this country from this crisis.”

“No, please don’t worry, I’ve heard about the overall situation already. Though I feel like I was thrown here against my will… Oh, your highness?” The hero looked curiously at the king’s face.

“Is something wrong, sir hero?”

“You’re surprisingly young, aren’t you? I thought you’d be some old man with a beard and whiskers.”

“So you’ve noticed, it hasn’t been long since I became king at a young age as you say. Although, it would’ve been better if my father and mother were still alive…”

“Excuse me, that was an impolite thing to say…”

“No, it’s fine, hero.” The king held his chin, muttering something. “I wonder, should I at least have prepared for a false moustache?”

The hero didn’t quite catch the king’s words, asking him again, “Did you say something, Your Highness?”

The king quickly denied it. “It’s nothing, sir hero! Well then, let’s discuss the details in the council room.”

The hero and the others moved to the council room.

Is He a Hero? “Yup.” — Prologue

Note: I said the character went to a Cthulhu mythos exhibition last chapter, but in reality the word referred to a doujin convention. Doujinshi as in, not NSFW comics but all self-published works by enthusiasts of a particular interest. The word sounds the same as a book from the Cthulhu mythos which seems to be an inside joke I was unaware of, ahah.

Last chapter summary: I died and got abducted by a goddess. It seemed she’d been helping my family out a lot after I left them behind.

Wanting to get to the main question, the goddess cut to the chase. “Well then, hero, someone like you must have already realized I’ll have you go on a journey to another world.”

“Yes, since you’re calling me ‘hero’.”

“I’m glad you get to the point so fast. In this world, you’ll go to a small country called ‘Cupulm Kingdom’ and attack some dungeons in the vicinity.”

“I’m going to attack dungeons, not save the world?”

“To be precise, you’ll be weakening some demons until they cannot damage the kingdom. I don’t mind how, so please wreak havoc as you see fit.

“Um, sorry to ask outright but would you give me the usual help or something?”

“I’ll give you the skill of language to get rid of the language barrier. You’re being summoned by a summoning circle in the palace so after that, the kingdom will probably figure something out, right?”

“Ah, so that’s how it is. Not to say I have any experience with fights like that, though.”

“Don’t worry about that, hero.” The goddess smiled sweetly. “The world you’re going to is blessed by the gods. Like the so-called RPGs in your world, there are levels and jobs in this world; when you kill your opponent in battle you earn blessings from the gods. When your blessing reaches a certain amount, you can improve your physical abilities or skills. In other words, you level up.”

“That means, anyone in this world can level up?”

“Yes, it’s not a special power only you have. However, managing to do simple work for eternity is your forte, isn’t it? You’ll get stronger right away. Once you’re at a certain level, please head to the cathedral. You can change your job to a better one there.”

“But won’t I get hurt by the monsters before I’m stronger…?”

The goddess smiled with just her mouth. “If you don’t fight, you’ll be destroyed along with the kingdom. Hey hero, it’s simple, isn’t it?”

I wouldn’t even mind dying again, but she’s telling me to fight for now? Come on… “Why was I chosen…?”

“Ah, that’s, well. The kingdom held a summoning ceremony, asking for someone to save the country. Perhaps they were under great pressure of necessity, since the ceremony was rather short and informal. Mainly the offering.” The goddess made a dark face.

“H-huh?”

I was a little bewildered, but she ignored me and continued in a tired way. “Because of that, I thought, ‘This disrespectful lot, talking to me like this!’ …Then I thought, ‘Ah, perfect,’ and chose you.”

“So you just carelessly chose me?!”

“It wasn’t careless, I did choose a suitable person considering your good intentions. Well then, hero, it is now time for your departure.”

“Hey, wait a minute!”

Bzzzzt!

Her expression half-angry, she fired lightning-like sparks from her fingers like a villain from an empire in a space movie, opening a gate.

“Now, hero, go teach this idiotic lot a lesson for thinking they’ll be saved right away if they just beg the gods for help every time the world’s in peril!!”I tried taking all that in, helpless. Then a certain question crossed my mind.

“Um, goddess… What was my name again?”

“Hm? Ah, name yourself whatever you please, since you’re starting a new life now!”

Not having a name bothers me, even if she says I can name myself whatever I please. Now to think of a name 5 characters long, just like in an RPG…

“Well, I’m a hero so I guess I’ll call myself ‘Yuuto’*…”

And then, my adventure began.

*Yuuto since hero in Japanese is ‘yuusha’.

Is He a Hero? “Yup.” — The Prologue Begins

Novel: Is He a Hero? “Yup.”
Author: Karumi Ayumu

“Wake up, open your eyes, hero!”

I sensed an unfamiliar woman’s voice resound directly in my head… My consciousness fuzzy, I did as I was told and opened my eyes.

“Uugh… Where am I?”

“Have you awakened, hero?”

I opened my eyes to see a goddess-like (?) glowing humanoid figure there. I’d woken up in a perfectly empty space, a void with no end or floor, but I couldn’t exactly describe this feeling as floating.

“Ah… Are you a female alien?! Abducting me of all people, just what is the meaning of this!?”

“I’m a goddess, hero, however I am most certainly not a form of extraterrestrial life. And now, hero, you have died.”

She’s not an alien? Wait, more importantly, I died?

The woman proclaiming herself to be a goddess continued, “You took part all day and all night for 3 days in a doujinshi convention* by gentlemen with similar taste as you, squandered all your money without a thought as to how you’d get home, attempted going home by foot, exhausted yourself halfway through and died.”

“I died…? This doesn’t feel like a dream…”

I should’ve been more freaked out knowing I died, but I’d already lost my physical senses by the 2nd day and my memory was too vague. I didn’t even know when I’d died, so maybe I just didn’t remember how it felt.

“That’s… Then what about my souvenirs, everything I bought?!”

The goddess calmly spread her hands and said, “Rest assured, hero, your souvenirs have all been resold by your family. For some reason, your family received an insurance payout after your death and the god of luck made your grandfather’s horse racing tickets win the lottery, so your bereaved family must be living very peacefully now.”

My loot from the exhibition had been sold without even being used… “Shit! If I’d just had a little more strength in me, this wouldn’t…”

“My condolences, hero. While I’m not in charge of your wife, the god of matchmaking is searching for a new gentleman for her as we speak.” The goddess spoke casually, even as she blurted out the most unexpected things.

“Um, that… Hey, Goddess?”

“Hero, I know what you want to say, but your wife still has a life to live after this…”

“You’re talking about that wife in my online game, right? Though, I thought Mofu-nyan was actually a guy in real life.”

“Oh!”

It felt like the world froze over then. The goddess was silent for a while, her face stiff, before opening her mouth. “It seems there’s a small defect in my news transmission. Please wait as I verify the situation and deal accordingly.”

“Alright.”

The goddess bowed, her retreating figure vanishing. She returned after what felt like 15 minutes.

“My sincere apologies. You were already destined for a trap…”

“No, I don’t really mind as long as he’s happy.” So he actually was as real as can be, that trap. I wanted to see him at least once while I was still alive.

“Ahem, it seems you no longer have any lingering attachments to the present world, so I’ll move onto the main question here.”

“Sure, go ahead.”

Somehow, it felt like I didn’t really care anymore.

*Note that ‘doujinshi’ refers to all self-published works in Japan, not the fanfiction or NSFW-only sense that it carries in the western world. Think fanzines, except they don’t have to be related to any fandom.
This was previously translated as Cthulhu Mythos as the word used for self-published works is similar to the name of a Cthulhu Mythos book. However, the author has now let me know the Cthulhu meaning is an inside joke.
