Chapter 14 — Even the Goddess Works Occasionally?

After the fierce fight with the demons, the hero had collapsed.

“Wake up, wake up, Hero.”

“Ugh…”

The goddess talked to the hero, but the hero seemed to be unable to sleep well, not waking up.

“Ha, it’s so shameful that you died, Hero.”

“Whaaaat!” The hero jumped to his feet. He was in that usual empty space with the goddess.

“So you’ve woken up, Hero. Of course, since I was lying when I said you died.”

“Please don’t startle me! My memories went back like a revolving lantern to the last place I saved after I collapsed!”

The goddess looked at the hero with a nonchalant face. “Hero, I did say that it’s the end if you die, but I didn’t say that you can start over from the place you saved? What is that, that thing you’re writing in your notebook that looks like a revival spell?”

“It’s not like that, it’s about my feelings.” The hero said that like it was obvious. The goddess didn’t change her expression, it seems she was already used to this.

“Well, you’re the one that’s actually trying so hard so it doesn’t affect me at all. But please don’t do anything unreasonable and really die. Hasn’t it only been three days? And then you’ve been leveling up too much, though it probably doesn’t matter if you’re the kind of hero that finds it difficult to increase your intellect…”

“What happens when you level up too much?”

The goddess made a suggestive face. “This is about a wizard that could easily increase his intellect, but as he leveled up his mind couldn’t catch up to his suddenly high intellect and we went crazy.” The goddess smiled in an ‘oops’ gesture.

“Isn’t that extremely dangerous?! What is this level up, the so-called ‘blessing of the gods’?!”

“It may be worth the ordeal, but it’s because you obtain power that you never had before. It’s the same as humans that win the lottery and then ruin their bodies.”

“Please say things like that earlier!”

“To be honest, I didn’t think an otaku would go so far. Hero, it seems you’ve learned healing magic, but don’t you think you can overdo it even further if you use it?”

“Uh, I did.”

“Although you can use different abilities here than from the world you were in, please don’t overdo it.”

“Alright.” The hero obediently nodded.

“Well, you can do whatever about that, but there’s something a little unpleasant related to what we were talking about earlier…”

Bzzz… Bzzz…

The hero felt like shocks were running through his body.

“Ah—what is this?”

For some reason, the goddess made an awkward face, ‘oh, whoops’.

“Crap, they’re here already?”

“Who’s here?”

The goddess crossed her arms, making a resigned face. “It seems someone is trying to carry out your body.”

“Carried out, you mean I’m being kidnapped right now?!”

“Yes, though I meant to guide you until you became able to protect yourself. You stand out too much, Hero, to think that you’d be found so quickly!”

Shocks ran through the hero’s body like noise.

Bzz… Bzz…

“It’s not the time to be in a place like this! I have to wake up, even if it’s by hitting my head.” The hero tried to hit his head but… He couldn’t.

“Hero, right now you are only a spirit, you don’t have a hand to hit with or a head to hit.”

“Then, what should I do?!”

“Since you’re wounded, I do not expect that you can wake up, fight her and run away. So please be obedient. Surely you can manage somehow.”

“‘Surely’….”

The goddess averted her eyes from the hero. “Well then, Hero, it seems I’m late so I’ll go home now.”

“Goddess?!”

“Well then, take care and stay level-headed, Heroes.”

The goddess ascended up towards the sky until he couldn’t see her anymore. The hero’s consciousness disappeared into darkness.

“Hmm~ Hmmm~ La la la~♪

“U-Ughh…”

The hero woke up from the sound of someone humming.

“Oh, so you’re awake!”

Chapter 13 — Which Way Are the Forest Monsters?

After safely (?) finishing his breakfast, the hero once again returned to the north gate to hunt monsters in the forest.

“Hmm, it’s surprising. So there’s ways to increase your stats besides just leveling up in combat.”

Gordon replied nonchalantly. “That’s true, though fighting is the best way to increase things directly related to combat. There’s also simple convenient ways too, but if you have the time, you should fight.”

‘I see, although you can’t fight if you’re weak, you can’t just stupidly rest either. I should walk around town to find ways to increase my supportive stats,’ the hero thought. “But why does this country give such a strange, mysterious meal to its soldiers…”

“There was a proper battle chef before, but we don’t have enough workers anymore since a lot either died from the demon’s effects or ran away. There’s a food shortage too, so the junior soldiers that can’t go out in battle make that through trial and error.”

“Battle chef… So there’s a job like that, hmmm, so I have to increase my cooking skill? Ugh, I really wanted to go on an adventure though…”

“That’s not something you should get worked up over, Hero. Just get stronger and save this country, please.”

“Well then, I’m off to do just that.”

“Take care. Please don’t be too rash this time!”

“Alright.”

Right as he entered the forest, the hero was attacked by monsters.

“Gahaha, there’s a sucker over there wearing a pot!”

“Hahaha! What the hell is that?!”

Two Beheading Ducks appeared.

“Birds huh, didn’t find any last time. I wonder what happened to the amoebas?”

“What the hell is he complaining about! Just quietly let us eat you!”

Beheading duck A attacks! The hero parries with his shield.

“Gah! Did this guy disguise his buckler as a pot lid?!”

The hero heavy attacks! The headless duck takes 19 damage.

“Gah, is this the stick-wielder the amoebas were yellin’ about?!”

“Get away from my big brother!”

Beheading duck B attacks. The hero parries with his shield. The hero looks like he’s having fun. “This shield, thank goodness I trained my sense of rhythm in that heartbreaking rhythm game.”

“I’ll distract him, you run! Tell everyone….”

The hero attacks while Duck A shouts. Beheading Duck A receives 10 damage, the hero has defeated Beheading Duck A.

“Big brother! Shit—” Beheading Duck B runs away.

“Like hell I’ll let you escape!” The hero sets off in pursuit of the escaped duck, catching up with Beheading Duck B.

“Aaaaah! Crap!”

“Take this!”

The hero heavy attacks while running! It’s a critical attack! Beheading Duck B receives 25 damage and is defeated.

“Gah—!”

The monsters turned to dust. The hero leveled up to level 5, his stats increased, he learned the skill ‘kamaitachi’*, now he could do ranged attacks by strongly wielding his weapons, creating a wind blade from the wind pressure.

“I wanna try this ranged attack!” The hero was excited!

Quack quack…

The hero looked towards the sound of baby birds. “Hm? Oh….”

He discovered the bird monsters’ nest! The monsters already entered battle!

“This guy! Is he the rumored serial killer that showed up yesterday?!”

“They say even though he’s weak, he kills demons while smiling with glee despite being injured…”

“Women and children, fall back! We’ll hold him back here!”

The hero feigned laughter. “Hahaha… So many monsters to try it out on, let’s go!”

An intense battle began with the monsters! But… the details of the battle are omitted.

One hour later… The hero became level 8, learned the healing magic ‘healsie’, became able to heal his strength by using magic.

“The hero’s back!” As the hero approached the north gate, one of the gatekeepers announced his return loudly.

Gordon greeted the hero when he was passing through the gate. “Welcome back, Hero. You aren’t as wounded as yesterday, huh?”

“Yes, since I got my equipment together. The healing salves are amazing, aren’t they?”

“Ahaha, your whole body’s gleaming with their leftover traces. What’s in that pot you’re holding?”

“Ah, this? I found some eggs so I put them in the pot to not break them. Would you buy them?”

The hero lifted the lid of the pot; it was full of monster eggs.

“Oh, this is amazing! You can sell these for a lot. There’s scholars that keep researching whether they can turn monsters into domestic animals, so those people would buy these…”

“Excuse me, would you hold this, Gordon?” The hero handed the pot to Gordon.

“Eh, alright? What’s the matter?”

The hero looked strange. He showed Gordon the contents of the bag he carried on his shoulder.

“And this, sometimes the monsters’ leftover bits remain besides just the items of dead adventurers so I collected them.

The hero learned the scavenger skill when he turned to level 7, now there was a fixed chance of the monsters’ remains being left.

“Oh, a monster part! We could use this as ingredients…. Hero?”

The hero was bleeding from his forehead.

“Excuse me, I did learn healing magic but I overused it so my mana points are too low… Gah—”

The hero started bleeding from all over his body! The nearby gatekeeper screamed, “Aaaagh! The hero’s liquefied!”

“No, it’s just his barely-closed wounds opening up! Mediiiiic!”

The hero kept his life thanks to Gordon’s precise instructions.

*Kamaitachi refers to both a Japanese yokai and also the cuts it causes by whirlwinds.

Chapter 12 — Meals are Important

The hero came back from the equipment store; by the time he arrived to the north gate, it was completely night-time.

“Gordon, pleeease let me use the barracks.”

“Oh, you’ve come back, Hero? And the old guy made you buy some strange things……:”

The hero trudged through the darkness, approaching Gordon. The hero’s appearance slowly grew clearer from the light of the lamp, then…

Trudge, trudge…

The hero wore the pot on his head, holding the pot’s lid in his left hand like a shield.

“You look so weird?!”

“Nope, I did some great shopping.”

“Great shopping?! Just what did he blow into you? He can’t be that bad. What did you do to the old man?!”

“I just did some shopping like usual? He’s a good person, he gently taught me even the basics of how to use ointments.”

“How were you getting those basics wrong?!”

Although he looked fine on the outside, some vigor had left the hero’s face. “Sorry Gordon, would you let me rest in the barracks? I’m kinda tired now.”

“Ah, that reminds me, you got wounded enough to nearly lose your life at the palace too, Hero. Did you have food properly?”

“Ah, now that you mention it, I only had a light lunch at the palace and haven’t eaten anything since.”

Gordon looked at the hero as if to say, ‘Aaaah..’ “Your hunger’s been numbed from that forceful recovery, so you’re acting weird… There’s probably a lot more things going weird with you that you haven’t noticed yourself.”

“Is that so?”

“If you haven’t had food yet, please get some soup from over there. I can’t guarantee it’s good since the taste changes every time you eat it, but even if you’re not hungry, please eat plenty, it’s going to help you in recovering.”

“I see, so that’s the effect food has. Understood, I’ll be sure to eat as much as I can.”

“Effect…. Well anyway, when you get in the cafeteria, get your cutlery and stand in line.”

“Alright.”

“Then when you return to your normal state, let’s return that pot. If I explain what happens, the old guy’ll understand……”

“No, I don’t want that.”

Gordon was confused. “Oh, alright.”

The hero entered the cafeteria, standing in the line where the soldiers stood. The hero’s turn came.

“Here you go, if you’d like seconds then stand in line again~”

“Alright.”

The hero sat in a random seat, starting his meal. “Thanks for the meal.”

The hero drank the junior soldiers’ soup. It tasted sickly-sweet, the hero’s self-recovery power barely rose.

“Hmm, still not enough? I”ll have another helping.”

The hero drank the junior soldiers’ soup. Sour! Very sour, it was effective! The hero’s fatigue was blown away, his self-recovery power rose.

“Burp, it really does change taste every time I eat it……. It’s difficult to keep eating here, huh, I’ll look for a proper eating house.”

The hero was full, he couldn’t eat anymore. He decided to rest in the barracks.

“Cock-a-doodle-doo!”

The next day, the hero woke up and left the barracks. The morning air was refreshing.

“Good morning, Hero. How’s your health? Well, looks like you haven’t taken the pot off… Hahaha!” Gordon couldn’t do anything but laugh.

“Good morning, Gordon. Yes, I’m completely fine now.” The hero had had plenty of rest, his status temporarily increased.

“Good to hear. It seems they finished preparing breakfast just now, wouldn’t you come eat with me, Hero?”

“Is it that soup again? Well, I only have a little money on me now, so let’s have breakfast there. Though I don’t want to…” The hero looked displeased.

“Oh, then why don’t we return that pot and get your money back, Hero? Sometimes you just want to have normal food, so let’s find a handy eating house.”

The hero completely rejected it. “No, that’s no good.”

“Hahaha, is that so, that’s right, ahahaha…..”

The hero and Gordon went to the cafeteria together, getting soup and sitting down. The hero hesitated to eat, while Gordon began eating first.

“Thanks for the meal. Ooh, it’s pretty salty this time, delicious. Slurp slurp.”

“Then will you have another bowl?”

“No no, Hero, it’s an unspoken rule here that if you think it tastes even a little delicious, you have to stop with that bowl. You’ll regret it if you don’t.”

“Is that so? Well then, I’ll dig in too.”

The hero ate the junior soldiers’ soup. Spicy! Bitter! Delicious! He couldn’t really understand it but anyway, all right! The hero received a special status, “The Beggar’s Stomach Lv 1”! He could slightly control the effects of bad statuses from the meal, this result was permanent.

“What is thiiiiiiiiiiiis!!!”

Gordon calmly watched as the hero roared. “It hit the spot, huh? As expected from the Hero. The first time really is surprising.”

Chapter 11 — Let’s Have a Hot Pot, Is the Hero the Season’s Special?

The hero had gone to the equipment store that Gordon had shown him.

“Y’know, I don’t think it’s possible but… Do you have nothing to put your items in?”

“Yes, besides the ointment I bought earlier, I have nothing but clothes and a wooden stick. Oh, do wallets and money count as items too?”

The hero gave a headache to the shopkeeper.

“I have a used belt and a pouch for 80 gold.”

“Do you have a bag, just big enough that I can put it into the pouch without any trouble? Since there’s items that are too many to pick up.”

“Would a backpack be troublesome?”

“I haven’t gone very far yet, so my strength is still low. So something lighter would be more convenient for me. That’s for when I level up.”

“Oh, so you may be ignorant but you’re not an idiot, huh? It’ll be 80 gold with the bag, it’s free.”

The hero bought a free pouch. Once he equipped it, he was able to hold more items. Using the bag inside the pouch sacrificed his mobility so he could carry many more items.

“Anything else?”

“I’d like to complete my armor, even though things here are rather cheap.”

“I got no armor or weapons, specialty workers deal with those things. I’m just a second-hand shop, I couldn’t customize those things for the customers so even if I had them, no one would buy them.”

“Ugh… so you just can’t use weapons you find in the dungeons unless you show them to a weapons maker? Oh, Sir, how much is that pot?”

“It’s cookware you can use on your journey. It’s been processed with sorcery, so you can cure it with magical barriers or magic if you break it. Because of that, it’s more expensive than a normal pot.”

“Then I’d like that pot and its lid please, how much is it?”

“Huh, the lid’s part of the set. It’s 50 gold… but…”

“A set! That’s a bargain. I’ll buy it.”

The hero bought the pot and the pot’s lid.

“I don’t really care but, you said earlier that you hadn’t gone very far yet… That’s going to be a heavy item.”

“Once I equip it, it won’t be an item.”

The hero equipped the pot on his head. Defense increased by 5.

The hero equipped the “pot’s lid” as his shield. Defense increased by 3…

“Oi, waaaait! That’s not armor!!” the shopkeeper shouted.

“What are you saying, isn’t this the usual equipment for the early days of an adventure?”

“No! I said the pot’s cookware!”

“That’s right, and what about it?”

“You’re not listening to me! And besides, demons basically eat people, right? You mean to walk in front of them wearing cookware?! That’s like you’re practically saying ‘Please eat me!’”

The hero looked relieved. “How wonderful… So you mean that… This equipment comes with the fantastic effect of drawing in demons?”

“….”

The shopkeeper was at a loss for words, then interrupted again. “That’s wrong! Though it might turn out like that…! Wait, did you just say ‘fantastic effect’?”

The hero nodded at something, leaving the store. “Yep, I’ve done some good shopping today. I’ll come back, sir!”

Thud.

The door shut, and silence spread for a while… After that, the store owner muttered to himself.

“He’s gonna come again…?”

Chapter 10 — The Hero Goes to an Equipment Shop

Ending his battle with his small-fry opponents, the hero returned to the north gate, waving at the gatekeeper and greeting him.

“Gordon, I’m hooome!”

“Oh, Hero, you really did come back right away… Huh, oi! Aren’t you covered with gashes all over?!”

The hero smiled, but his pace was unsteady and staggering. “No, well, once I started chasing those amoebas I just couldn’t stop. I want to recover now so please tell me the nearest inn… Cough—”

The hero vomited blood!

“Use our barracks! Oi, medic! Medic!”

The hero received treatment from the medic.

“It’ll take some time for your strength to recover, so try not to fight anymore today, alright?”

“No.”

“Please rest! Alright?!”

“Yes. Though I wanted to level up more… It’s such a pain to actually sleep and recover in the inn until tomorrow, isn’t it?”

Gordon was at his wits’ end watching the hero.

“He’s certainly more promising now than before he left….. Just what tragedies happened in that short time?”

“That reminds me, Gordon. These things came out once I defeated the amoebas.” The hero brought out the junk he’d picked up from the monsters’ remains.

“Is that the belongings of the people eaten by the demons? If it’s alright with you, I’ll buy them, though I won’t pay too much.”

“Alright.”

The hero received 40 gold.

“Excuse me, I’d like to get my equipment ready so would you tell me where the equipment store is? I’d like to have some medicinal plants.”

“That’s right nearby. The store used to deal with travelers in the beginning, but it’s in decline now so only our troops are using it these days. I’ll take you there, I think I can get the prices down a little for you.”

“Alright, thank you, Gordon.”

The hero headed towards the equipment shop.

“Welcome.”

“Hey, old man. Brought you a customer.”

“A new recruit?”

“No, he’s not a soldier. He’s the great Hero our country summoned.”

“Oh yes, that’s a rumor lately.”

“Hello, I’m Hero Yuuto.”

“So wouldn’t you give him a little extra service? I think he’s gonna become a regular from now on. As you can see, his wounds aren’t gonna stop anytime soon, unlike ours.”

“Hm? What is it?” Covered in wounds, the hero looked blank.

“Hahaha, indeed. It’s no use if my inventory goes to waste, so I’ll make it cheaper.”

“Thank you, old man. Well then, Hero, I’m going to get back to work so please take your time shopping. When you have to sleep, please use our barracks, you can freely use the room we carried you into.”

“Thank you for everything, Gordon.”

Gordon bid farewell to the hero. The hero began talking to the shopkeeper.

“Well then, I’d like to get some medicinal plants right away. How much is one?”

“Medicinal plants? Can you make the ointment by yourself?”

“Are medicinal plants just the raw ingredients?”

“They’re difficult to use if you don’t process them in a way you can use right away. How have you been curing your wounds until now?”

“I ate the medicinal plants.”

“You ate them?! You didn’t chew them up, make them into mash and put them on your wounds?”

“Ah, I should’ve done that. They were certainly difficult to use.”

The storeowner was greatly perplexed.

“Look, this is the ointment.”

The shopkeeper showed the hero some ointment in a wooden container but it was a syrupy, yellow ointment. Upon looking closer, the hero realized that it had two layers: the inner part of the box was ceramic, while the outer was wood. It must’ve been devised that way so the ceramic wouldn’t break from a crash.

“It’s 50 gold including the container. If you bring your own, it’s 30 gold; I’ll fill it all up for you.”

“Well then, this one please. I’m supposed to use it little by little on all my wounds, right? Not just use it all up in one go.”

“Of course. Don’t eat it, no matter what. Once it goes stale and turns black, throw it away. Don’t be stingy there.”

The hero bought the ointment.

“Understood. However…”

“What?”

“I’m not used to shopping, so this is rather difficult, isn’t it?”

“This is also my first time having a customer like this……”

But the hero’s shopping would go on! Sure enough, that’s the shopkeeper’s fate!”

“Goddess, what are you saying?”

An angel asked that to the goddess, who was sitting in the heavens talking to herself.

“No, it’s nothing. I was just gazing at a peculiar animal on the lower world.”

“I see. Thank you very much for working so hard.”

Chapter 9: Beginner’s High

Although they were almost attacked by a demon in the middle of their journey, the hero and Cynthia didn’t realize it, instead mentally cornering the demon and safely arriving to the north gate. The gatekeeper came out to greet them.

“Welcome, welcome, Miss Cynthia. And that must be the usual Sir Hero, right?”

“Yes. He’s a bit on the peculiar side, so please deal with him carefully.”

“Pleased to meet you, Mister Gatekeeper. I’m Hero Yuuto.”

“Hahaha, I’m the one who’s pleased to meet you, Hero. I’m Gordon, the guy in charge of guarding this gate.”

Gordon heartily clapped the hero’s back. Then he made a blank face, as if realizing something.

“Pretty delicate for a hero, huh? Isn’t he weaker than our rookies?”

“Unfortunately, it seems like we couldn’t get an invincible savior. But he does have a certain cold vigor about him, almost as if he’s mad, so I suppose he’s more than enough if you just consider personality. I think he’ll have some trouble but please look after him for a while.”

“What, can’t you just go ‘the hero’s going to save us so it’s all right, wonderful, wonderful’? Alright! Would you practice with me for a while, Hero?”

“No, it’s fine. But please let me fight the demons, I think that’s probably going to be faster.” The hero held his wood stick with a confident face. He was irritatedly thinking, ‘this tutorial really is long.’

“You’re gonna fight with that stick?”

Gatekeeper Gordon looked rather dubious, so Cynthia supported the hero. “He defeated a demon that had invaded the palace with that stick.”

“Seriously? They do say you gotta start with the basics, but still.”

The hero fidgeted, like a child waiting his turn for a ride in the amusement park. “Well then, I’ll be heading off now. Here’s my permit.”

“Well then, hero, excuse me here. I have to return to King George, since there are more demons that may invade the palace.”

“Alright. Thank you very much, Cynthia.”

The hero started quickly walking out. The gatekeeper was about to stop him, but Cynthia stopped him.

“Hey, does the hero think he can go alone?! I can’t let that…”

“Please let him go, he extremely hates asking for help. But please alert a medical team here for whenever he comes back, since he really is the definition of ‘reckless’.”

With a smile on his face, the hero disappeared into the forest.

“I’ll just see how it goes and get back quick. But ah, I’ve gone through this moment where I first get to fight freely so many times but it still gets me so excited…”

“He’s smilin’ like a child. I get it, he really is crazy…” Gatekeeper Gordon seemed to have given up.

In the forest, the hero said, “Ahaha, I don’t have any teleportation magic or items so I shouldn’t go too far.”

“Hehehe, you got some guts to go in this forest alone!”

The hero encountered three jelly amoebas.

“They’re here! So they really are the slime types.”

The hero boldly smiled. The demons were bewildered.

“This guy looks like he’s been looking for us…”

“Calm down, eldest son! He’s weak either way!”

“Listen to the second son, he doesn’t have armor or a sword either…”

The hero attacked. Jelly Amoeba C received 8 damage.

“Gah, ouch!”

“How dare you attack the third son!”

Jelly Amoeba B attacked, the hero received 8 damage.

“Hmph!”

The hero attacked! Not responding to the attack from Amoeba B, he aimed for Amoeba C. Jelly Amoeba C received 7 damage and was defeated.

“?!”

“He’s trying to decrease our numbers!”

“The third son’s enemy!”

“Wait, second son!”

Amoeba B leapt in, and the hero countered it. Jelly Amoeba B received a critical attack! Jelly Amoeba B took 13 damage and was defeated.

The hero leveled up! He became level 3.

The hero learnt the skill ‘heavy attack’ to deliver huge damage to an enemy.

“I’m getting experience points as I kill more enemies and level up. But my wounds don’t heal, huh?”

“Eep! He really is used to fighting! I didn’t want to resort to this method, but… Gah…”

“Hm?!”

‘I’ll throw away my pride as a demon and survive, that’s the fundamental part of living!’ With a do-or-die resolve, Amoeba A did a ritual!

Amoeba A looked at the hero with big round eyes. “Please – help me – I’m not a – bad amoe—……”

“Haaagh!”

The hero dealt a heavy attack! Jelly Amoeba A received 16 damage. The monsters were defeated.

“So this is skill…”

The monsters turned to dust and disappeared. From within the dust came out the lost items of the people they had eaten.

The hero got 30 gold.

“Felt like he was trying to be friends with me but… But there’s no way a monster would try to be friends with me with a tutorial like this, I haven’t even met a monster tamer and I don’t even have a wagon.”

After that, the hero battled the amoebas that stuck around near the north gate for 30 minutes. By the time he returned to town, he was level 4.

Chapter 8: The Hero’s Adventure Starts After This!

Cynthia scolded the hero for trying to break the jar.

“Besides, Sir Hero, I just don’t understand what jars and barrels are to you. Breaking and fishing through people’s property or public items is bad!”

“Ah, I guess it really was no good, huh?”

“You guess, so you knew it was bad. Then why did you do it?”

“Because I’m a hero.”

“Just what are heroes like in your world….. Anyway, if you keep doing that you’ll be arrested by the guards. Please repent so you won’t do it again!”

“Repent… Ah, that’s right, I almost forgot.”

The scene shifts to the demon who was trying to return to its hideout.

“Dammit, acting like a human is such a pain…”

It had been caught by one of the neighbors of the house it was using as a hideout, and was now going to church.

“See, today you’re going to pray properly, since you always get it over with and go home early.”

“I’m not good with places like this, granny.”

The demon couldn’t say ‘my body will start burning if I stay here too long’ so it had to endure it, interacting with the neighbors to properly act like a human.

“Don’t say that. If you come and pray here everyday, one day in troubling times God will save you.”

Flashing an evil smile, the demon thought, ‘Heh, I’d sooner put a curse on him.’ Just then, the doors to the church opened and a familiar lot entered.

“Hi, we’d like to pray here.”

“Gah, Hero?!”

Worried about the surprised demon, the elderly woman asked, “What’s the matter?”

“N-no, it’s nothin’…”

The demon suddenly felt someone peering at it. It turned around to see the maid there.

“Oh, it’s you.”

“Eep!”

“I’m sorry about my companion earlier. I’ve properly disciplined him so he won’t do things like that again.” The maid apologized, bowing her head to the demon.

“No, really, don’t worry about it, Miss Maid, ahaha…”

The demon was relieved, ‘Seems like they didn’t chase me down here.’

The priest started talking to the hero. “I haven’t seen you before, are you travelling?”

“Yes, I just got here yesterday. It’s my first time at church, how should I pray?”

“Well then, please go to the altar, kneel and hold your hands together.”

“So it’s fine if I copy what everyone else is doing?”

“Yes, that’s right. O god, please bless your new believer!”

The hero sat beside the demon.

‘Why beside me?! Is it because I chose the farthest spot from the altar?’ As the demon felt restless, it was struck by the final blow.

“I’ll pray too, since it looks like things will get harder from now on.” The maid also sat beside the demon.

The demon was about to retort, ‘I’m stuck in between?! Why?! Go sit by the hero, you! Do you bastards not get along?!’ But it managed to endure it.

“Well now, I’ll go home for the day.”

“See you tomorrow, Father.”

“Yes, see you tomorrow too. May God bless all of you.”

The neighbors were about to go home, but the demon didn’t notice. It was too busy desperately trying to pray so it wouldn’t look suspicious.

“He’s  praying really hard today, isn’t he? There’s steam coming from his body.”

“Something definitely happened with him. Let’s quietly go home so we won’t bother him.”

“Right, it’s pretty unusual for him to be like this.”

The demon was left in the church.

The hero asked the priest a strange question. “Excuse me, Father, don’t you have an adventure log?”

“Adventure log? If you mean the Bible, I have it.”

“Do you mean something like a diary to record one’s daily actions? I have a new notepad here, feel free to use it if you like.” The maid handed the hero a notepad with a fountain pen in it.

“Thank you. You really do have everything, Cynthia.”

‘A journal! That’s handy, I gotta stay here a little longer. Just what’s he writin’?’ The demon peeked into the hero’s adventure log. Written there was:

Username: Super Yuuto Yuuto
Password: zxcvbnm

Would you like to save?
( YES )    |    NO

The demon was bewildered. ‘What kind of spell is this?! Or, actually, is this some code??’

“Hmm, I’ve written in my adventure log so why don’t we leave now, Cynthia?”

“Was it necessary to write it at the church, Sir Hero?”

“That’s just how it is.”

The hero and the maid left the church.

“I-I’m saved…… O god, I thank you for saving me from that guy!” The demon prayed from the bottom of its heart, smoke coming from its body as it cried.

Watching that, the priest said, “What a beautiful prayer, full of piety. What holy war were we in the last time I saw this…..?”

The demon received 20 damage from God’s divine love.

Chapter 7: The Hero’s Adventure Has Already Begun

The hero left the castle, heading towards the north gate. But…

“Why are you coming with me, Cynthia?”

“I’m going to supervise your actions. Since you’ve been summoned from another world, we have to make sure that you can adapt to our society.”

“I see.”

The town was peaceful at a glance, but lurking in it was a demon disguised as a human, aiming for the hero.

“Muahaha, your adventure’s gonna end by my hand before it even starts, hero!”

The demon waited for its chance, hiding a dagger behind its back.

“Well, it’s just a formality. There won’t be any problems if you act naturally…. Huh? Sir Hero?” Cynthia lost sight of the hero.

“–!? No way, did he notice me?!”

The hero ignored the maid beside him, approaching where the demon was.

The demon panicked for a moment, wondering if its true form had been exposed. But then it thought, ‘Nah, he’s not lookin’ at me. Probably just sensed that something’s here, but he doesn’t know which one of the people here is the enemy. I still got a chance to kill him!’

Trudge, trudge…

“…!” The demon was nervous, taking a step back as the hero slowly trudged towards it. Then it bumped into a well from behind, dropping its dagger into the well.

Splash!

The demon desperately held back a yell, internally shouting,  ‘Shit———!’

“Here I come!” The hero shouted, leaping forward.

‘Crap! He’s gonna kill me!’ Right as the demon resolved himself…

Splash!

The hero dived into the well with a splashing sound.

“Aaaah!”

“Someone jumped into the well!!”

Glug, glug…

“I just told you——!” Cynthia pulled the hero out of the well.

“Hm, that was dangerous. To think that the water in the well would be so deep…”

“It’s a well, of course there’s water inside! You weren’t trying to run away by going through underground waterways, were you?!”

“Wait, so it’s not normal here for there to be a small space in the well, where items fall?”

‘I’m safe,’ the demon thought in relief. Just then, a nearby human began talking to it.

“Hey, that guy called ‘hero’, maybe he was trying to get back that thing you dropped in the well?”

“W-well?! N-no, I ain’t lost anything!” The demon lied, patting its pockets in a checking gesture.

“That so? Oh no, what if it’s my wallet…” The person anxiously checked his pockets.

The maid looked stunned at the hero. “Just what kind of structure do the wells in your world have…? Wells are just there to draw water from, there’s no secret space underground. Well, I used to think that when I was a child… Sir Hero?!”

The demon thought, ‘Well, I still have weapons hidden in this town in case things like this happen. There’s some deadly poison in a jar nearby here.’

Then, a frightening scene happened.

“Well, if barrels are impossible to break, then do jars break? Heave-ho!”

The hero lifted up the jar, and was about to throw it in the demon’s direction.

The demon held back a scream, yelling internally, ‘Not that jar——!’

“Please stop throwing jars whenever you feel like it!” Cynthia stopped the hero’s movements.

“I’m just trying to check if there’s something inside.”

“Still, please stop trying to throw and break them! Look, you’ve frightened this person!”

The hero looked at the demon, lowering his head. “Oh, I’m sorry.”

“N-no, it’s nothing, I was just a bit surprised.”

Wiping the sweat off of its forehead, the demon thought, ‘Can’t make light of this hero… Guess I’ll return to the hideout for now,’ and left that place.

Chapter 6: The Kingdom’s Secret

Everyone managed to somehow regain their peace of mind one way or another. The king and the hero sat in their seats, face to face.

“My apologies, Sir Hero. I behaved unsightly a while ago.”

“No, I should be the one apologizing.”

It was all probably because the goddess tampered with his translation skill. The hero now regretted saying too much unnecessary things to her.

“Well then, Sir Hero, about the topic I wanted to discuss earlier before it comes into the public eye…”

“Is it about why you’re hiding the fact that you’re a woman?”

“Yes.”

The king took off her crown, changing her expression.

“My name is George Cupulm, the 37th king of the Cupulm Kingdom. But my real name is Georgia Cupulm.”

“Your real name and your male name aren’t that different, are they?”

“Indeed, thanks to my head maid Cynthia. So if by any chance someone that knows the secret calls me Georgia by accident, people will ignore it as a slip of the tongue.”

The maid standing beside the king took a step forward, introducing herself before bowing and stepping back. “I’m the head maid that takes care of all of Miss Georgia’s daily needs. Pleased to meet you.”

“Pleased to meet you too.”

‘Is Georgia a girl’s name? I can’t stop thinking of the coffee.’* The hero was thinking about such things when he realized he still hadn’t named himself.

“That reminds me, I haven’t given my name yet. My name is Yuuto, I don’t have a surname.”

“Sir Yuuto, is it? Pleased to meet you once again.”

“Pleased to meet you too.” Her pronunciation was a bit off, but he ignored it.

“I disguised myself as a man and became king because my father… The previous king died in a battle with the demons, and the original successor, my older brother Julius, went missing.”

“Ah, I heard the kingdom was facing a crisis. You’ve been at your wit’s end from the king dying.”

“Yes. Because of that, I began ruling the country in place of my brother, and here we are now. Well then, Sir Yuuto, I would like you to absolutely never reveal that I am a woman to anyone.”

“Yes.”

The hero gave a short reply, so Cynthia emphasized it.

“Depending on the circumstances, we might have to cut off your head so please sincerely be careful.”

Georgia reacted to Cynthia’s words; it seemed Cynthia may have said too much. “Cynthia!”

“We cannot have any events that make the people panic more. Sir Hero, please, keep the secret at all costs.”

“Yes.” Despite their words, the hero didn’t change his expression. But on the inside, he was worrying, ‘Will I be stuck in a loop forever if I don’t answer with no?’

“Well then, when can I leave on my adventure?”

Cynthia was surprised at the hero’s words. Georgia watched over him quietly.

“You almost died yesterday and you still want to fight now?!”

“It doesn’t hurt anymore. Though it did hurt to use up the medicinal plants in the first battle.”

The king was certain then. It wasn’t just that this hero was used to fighting, he didn’t even need to use the medicinal plants in yesterday’s battle with the demon. It seemed he had seriously been weakened by the greatly faulty summoning.

Although he looked slow at a glance, she couldn’t feel anything like a sense of justice or a hatred towards demons in his expression. For this man, fighting demons was so natural despite how powerless he was – that much she could feel. Just how many battlegrounds had he survived before arriving here?

Cynthia took out a toolbox from somewhere, approaching the hero.

“Here, please take as many medicinal plants and other healing items as you like.

“No, I don’t like them. It feels like I’m cheating.”

Regaining her kingly expression, Georgia stopped Cynthia.

“That’s enough, Cynthia. Sir Hero, you should head to the north gate once you leave this castle. The forest monsters would be just right for you to warm up.”

“Miss Georgia…”

The king handed something that looked like a document to the hero.

“You should take this passage permit with you. You’ll need it to cross the gate, so please don’t lose it. I’m counting on you, Sir Hero.”

“Alright.”

Is He a Hero? “Yup.” Chapter 5 — ‘The King is a Great Person’ – the Goddess

Chapter 5: ‘The King is a Great Person’ – the Goddess

“Uugh… Where am I…?”

The hero opened his eyes, forcibly awakening his half-asleep mind. He raised himself up, looking around only to see the king sitting in a chair beside the bed, looking at him.

“So you’ve awakened, Sir Hero. Thank goodness.”

“Where am I, Your Highness?”

He remembered collapsing after the battle, so he thought he’d surely have been taken to the infirmary, but it seemed he was awakened in a canopy bed. He could infer that it was expensive, something you keep in your room.

The king answered the hero’s question. “You’re in my room. Um… The barrier that restores your strength is better here than in the barracks, and it was more convenient considering the security here too.”

The king looked embarrassed for some reason.

“Barrier… You mean something like, when you sleep at an inn and it restores your strength?”

“Yes, that’s right. Well, there is a difference in the quality when it comes to inns specially for adventurers, but this has an identical barrier added.”

Suddenly worried, the hero checked his wounds. “It doesn’t hurt at all. My clothes aren’t torn either, did you have them changed again?”

The king turned bright red, flustered, and said, “No, not at all! Your clothes had black magic cast on them, so they were fixed when we cured you with white magic, that’s all.”

“Hmm, I guess you don’t have to worry about mending armor, huh? And now, heave-ho!” The hero tried getting up from his bed.

“Sir Hero, your footwear is here.”

“Thank you.” The hero put on his shoes, standing up.

“Please sit in the seat there. You must be tired, but there is something we must discuss before it falls under the public eye…”

“Oh, before that, could you please guide me to the church? I’ve heard it’s the end if I die, but I’d like to save just in case.”

“Church?!” The king covered her red cheeks with her hands, eyes wide open.

Clang, clang…

The sound of ringing bells came from somewhere. Judging from the sun, he guessed they might be chimes announcing it was noon then. “Ah, it’s noon now.”

Flustered, the king was trembling all over.

“What happened, Your Highness?”

“To think… You don’t know when you’ll die, so you want to leave behind a mark of your existence with me at the church…”

“So that’s how ‘save’ got translated?!”

“But Sir Hero, I swore I’d live as a man to support this country…!”

“Please calm down, Your Highness!”

The king regained her usual dignity.

“My apologies, Sir Hero. It seems I got a bit distracted.”

“Hm…. Thank god.” It seemed she’d calmed down one way or another.

“If I married the hero that saved the world, the country would be at peace. Even if I was exposed as being a woman, the people’s morale would rise! In other words, this would be a political marriage of convenience – and that’s nothing to be ashamed about, being royalty!!”

“You haven’t calmed down at all!?”

There was a strong knocking on the door; perhaps someone had heard the commotion.

Knock knock knock…

“King George, has something happened?!” the maid from yesterday called out, from the other side of the door.

“Come in, Cynthia. Prepare a white dress for me, right away!”

“Excuse me!” The maid called Cynthia entered, seizing the excited king. Somehow, it felt like the maid was also dropping her act.

“Georgia, what happened? First of all, calm down!”

“Let go of me, Cynthia! This too, is the duty of royalty!”

“Georgia! You’re being a little too loud!”

The hero was confused at the catastrophic scene. “That’s right! I haven’t gotten to the middle of the story yet, so if I get married, won’t my son end up becoming the main character?!”

The king was once again bewildered. “You’re planning so far ahead already?!”

“So, that’s, we can’t – uwaaaah!” The hero let out a roar.

Unable to understand the situation, the maid was about to cry. “You calm down too, Sir Heroooo——!”
